Tips & Tricks
Good habits before you ever apply.
A few minutes of prep before you borrow — or before you decide not to — can save real money. Here's what that prep looks like.
Run the APR before the offer, not after
Use the Signal Console calculator on any flat fee before you apply. A "$15 per $100" fee reads very differently once it's annualized.
Borrow only what the emergency costs
Lenders often approve more than you asked for. Taking the higher amount just means a bigger finance charge on the same due date.
Confirm your state's rules first
Fee caps, rollover limits, and cooling-off periods vary widely by state. A loan that's routine in one state may be restricted or banned in the next.
Ask what happens if you're late — before you sign
Late fees, NSF charges, and default interest are usually disclosed separately from the base finance charge. Get the exact numbers up front.
Never roll a loan over without doing new math
A rollover isn't a grace period — it's a brand-new finance charge on the same principal. Recalculate the total cost every time.
Call the lender before the due date, not after
Some lenders offer extended payment plans if you ask before you default. Waiting until you've missed the date removes that option.
Alternatives Worth Ten Minutes Of Research
Options that often cost far less
Credit union PALs
Federal credit unions can offer Payday Alternative Loans capped around 28% APR, built specifically to undercut payday lenders.
Payment plans
Utilities, medical providers, and landlords will often set up a payment plan for free if you ask before the bill is overdue.
Employer advances
Some employers offer earned-wage access or a short advance on your paycheck, usually at little or no cost.
Community assistance
Local nonprofits and religious organizations frequently run emergency-need funds for rent, utilities, and food.
Credit card cash advance
Expensive, but usually still cheaper than a payday loan — worth comparing the two APRs directly.
Negotiate the original bill
Many billers will reduce or waive late fees for a first missed payment if you call before it goes to collections.
